Aalborgers stepped onto a brand-new rink on C.W. Obels Plads on 15 December 2018. Its future had been uncertain a few seasons earlier, when the old rink was worn out and money for a new one was hard to find in the municipal budget, until residents protested, local businesses backed them and the politicians found a solution.
Local press has since described the rink as one of the fixed annual traditions of Aalborg's centre, drawing thousands of skaters to the square each year, and as the rink on the square that draws crowds in the cold winter months. Aalborg Ishockey Klub and Aalborg Skøjteløberforening run its rental booth in alternating weeks, even and odd, and for skating indoors the municipality points to Gigantium.
